A partial track list for Guitar Hero Van Halen , one of the many upcoming entries in Activision’s lucrative cash-cow franchise, has apparently been leaked. Don’t take this as gospel folks. Activision hasn’t announced anything official, so we’re tagging this as a rumor for now. Here it is:

* Dope Nose by Weezer
* I Want It All by Queen
* Jump
* Panama
* Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
* The Takedown by Yellowcard
* You Really Got Me
* And the Cradle Will Rock…

The game will ship with a total of 44 tracks — 25 from the band and 19 from other artists. I’m not knocking Guitar Hero fans here, but I find it a bit sad that this console game will ship with only 3 songs more than the handheld Rock Band Unplugged. You can do better than that, Activision.

Guitar Hero: Van Halen is slated for a Holiday release on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

Metallica will be playing a surprise show at Stubb’s, Austin’s legendary venue, on Friday, March 20 at 10 p.m. as part of the “Guitar Hero: Metallica” showcase at Texas capital’s annual South By Southwest music festival.

Stadium headliner Metallica is going to play Stubb’s, a venue that holds only 2,100 for the Guitar Hero: Metallica release party. Metallica’s site says “There will be live music, a DJ, and of course the boys will be hangin’ out . . . and who knows what else might happen!”.

It will be a standard SXSW policy, with badges and wristbands getting priority. There will also be a line for those willing to pay cover, but admission will be based on space availability. But as Stubb’s is an outdoor venue fans will be able to hear the band all the way to Hyde Park.

Starting Wednesday, March 18, there will be a three day “Metallica Madness” Guitar Hero tournament at the Best Buy store in South Austin, TX during the South by Southwest Music Festival.High scorers on each of the three days (one drummer and one guitarist plus a couple of runners up to make the “elite eight”) will then move on to compete Friday night at a special Guitar Hero: Metallica release party at Stubb’s, also in Austin, TX.

Activision announces the chance to kit out your e-band individually!

It was announced by Activision today that gamers wishing to upgrade their Guitar Hero guitar controllers or to expand their band to include the drums will be able to do so as soon as this coming weekend.

With February 15th slated as the release date, Guitar Hero fanatics can look forward to an improved, redesigned Guitar controller, incorporating a touch-sensitive slide on the neck which is compatible with all prior incarnations of this addictive music game. The drums will feature three drum pads, two cymbals and a bass kit pedal. The pads are specially designed with a soft rubber constitution in order to create a bounce that’s reminiscent of playing real drums.
